Welcome to Crossbarry
Crossbarry (Crois an Bharraigh in Irish) is a small village set along the R589 regional road in Innishannon parish, County Cork, about 20 km southwest of Cork city. The River Owenabue flows through the village , giving it a peaceful, rural character rooted in the West Cork landscape.
The village holds a proud and significant place in Irish history. On 19 March 1921, the Crossbarry Ambush โ one of the largest engagements of the Irish War of Independence โ took place here, when roughly a hundred IRA Volunteers under the command of Tom Barry successfully broke free from an encirclement by a vastly superior British force. A memorial at the site today honours those who fought.
The West Cork Railway once passed through the village, and a junction station connected the area to Kinsale. Though quiet today, Crossbarry remains a community with strong local schools, family amenities, and deep ties to the history of West Cork.
